If I had a time machine, I’d go back in time to any point in my personal past and I’d tell myself: “Things are gonna be different.” Because they usually will be. And I think that’s something that I have needed to hear at every stage in my life.

There are times in my life when I get utterly hopeless and I worry that things are gonna stay like that forever. Shit, when I was sitting in that museum theater back in 2016, I was entering one of my first depressive episodes before I even knew I had a mental illness. I was experiencing heartbreak and confusion about my career and uncertainty and instability about so many things. Hell, Donald Trump was about to be elected president! Times were rough.

But here I am, seven years in the future. My struggles of today don’t compare to my struggles of yesterday. Nor do my triumphs. If I could just remember that,
